How a Disaster Drill is performed in Japan (1) ?

First time I went to Japan and started to do my research on Disaster Prevention Management, one think that I really wanted to know was about Japanese Disaster Drill. Why? Because, many of you may know that Japan is one country that very concerns about Disaster, and Japan is well known for its frequent earthquakes.

And finally…I got the opportunity to see and joint to a big disaster drill. Yes it was big, as some main institutions and a lot of citizens were participated (about 300 hundred people). Here we talk about Disaster Drill that conducted at an evacuation shelter of Hodogaya ward area or Hodogaya-Ku (for my Indonesian readers, ward area is the same level as Kecamatan), Yokohama City.

The board of OrganizationParticipating Institution were Kuyakusho (ward office), Shoubousho (Fire Department), Water System, and Evacuation Shelter.

For disaster Prevention, community of citizen are already organized in Yokohama. For every neighborhood community, there is a community leader who lead actions and become an intermediate between the local community and the formal institutions. Therefore, basically this disaster drill was an exercise for formal institutions and community for their readiness to cope and work together in a disaster event, as well as checking all the equipments.
